                  <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_3" n="N002"/>I suppose that some of you didn’t make it last Thursday, so for their benefit
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_4" n="N003"/>I want to repeat some of the technical arrangements of these lectures. <gap/> I want to
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_5" n="N004"/>review briefly the main line of thought of the first lecture.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_6" n="N005"/>I said that the two subjects, religion and culture, are very large ones and must
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_7" n="N006"/>be limited to those points in which all the different cultural functions become religiously
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_8" n="N007"/>relevant. In order to make this understandable, we have to discuss first the meaning of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">culture</rs>,
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_9" n="N008"/>and then the meaning of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religion</rs>, and on this basis, relate them to each other during the
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_10" n="N009"/>lectures of this and the next semester. By the way, this brings me to another technical
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_11" n="N010"/>problem. I have been asked whether it is possible to take this course only for one
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_12" n="N011"/>semester, either for this or the next semester. I believe there is no difficulty of doing so
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_13" n="N012"/>because this semester will mainly deal with a special group of cultural functions, in contrast
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_14" n="N013"/>to those with which we will deal next semester.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_15" n="N014"/>The organization of the lectures is identical with the organization of culture. Perhaps you
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_16" n="N015"/>remember that I defined <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">culture</rs> as the creative encounter between a subject and its object, in
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_17" n="N016"/>which something is produced which has the power of independent being—which has an
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_18" n="N017"/>independent <rs type="keyword" ref="#Power_of_Being">power of being</rs>. Now to this I got a typed question, and I think a very good
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_19" n="N018"/>example. Please don’t hesitate to do that, from lecture to lecture—or, if you are very
              <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_20" n="N019"/>courageous <gap/> raise your finger <gap/> (which really should not take much courage!) <gap/>

                  <emph rend="allcaps">Answer (Paul Tillich)</emph>: Now this is a very good and certainly a very necessary question.
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_25" n="N024"/>The idea was the following. If we have the subject (who is a poet, let us say), and have
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_26" n="N025"/>the English <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">language </rs>(which is the material object this poet encounters), then in a cultural
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_27" n="N026"/>creativity he is able to make, out of this object, something new which is neither he alone
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_28" n="N027"/>nor the English language alone, but is something new created out of the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Encounter">encounter</rs> between
               <lb facs="#facs_11_tr_2_tl_29" n="N028"/>him as subject, and the English language as object. And this encounter produces a poem.

                  <rs type="keyword" ref="#Power_of_Being">power-of-being</rs>! <hi rend="italics">[laughter]</hi> and a cultural creation in the realm of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Poetry">poetry </rs>is a poem

                  <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_5" n="N005"/>Take another example from the practical realm, e.g., a <rs type="keyword" ref="#Political_Movement">political movement</rs>.
              <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_6" n="N006"/>Many political movements are going on in our time—the witness to this is my wastepaper
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_7" n="N007"/>basket!—These political movements, which are immediately thrown into this most important
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_8" n="N008"/>tool of existence <hi rend="italics">[laughter]</hi>, have no independent <rs type="keyword" ref="#Power_of_Being">power-of-being</rs>, they don’t reach the state of
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_9" n="N009"/>independent cultural realities. But sometimes it happens that out of such a movement,
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_10" n="N010"/>something comes out which changes the surface of the earth, as for instance the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Nazism">Nazi </rs>movement,
              <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_11" n="N011"/>the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Communism">Communist </rs>movement, and, in earlier periods, the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Democracy">democratic </rs>movement.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_12" n="N012"/>Now this is, then, a cultural reality which has the power of independent existence,
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_13" n="N013"/>born out of the chaotic social situation on the one hand, and a <rs type="keyword" ref="#Creativity">creative</rs> political subject
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_14" n="N014"/>on the other hand. Out of this kind of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Encounter">encounters</rs>, all <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">culture </rs>is created. That is what I meant

               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_21" n="N020"/>human <rs type="keyword" ref="#Mind">mind</rs> to see and to create universals. This power is language. And therefore I said the
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_22" n="N021"/>first section of our lectures, with which we shall start next week, will be the problem:
              <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_23" n="N022"/>“Religion and Language."</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_24" n="N023"/>I come now to the activity of man towards reality in his encounter with it,
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_25" n="N024"/>which we can call the transformation of reality, the transforming or <rs type="keyword" ref="#Technical_Function">technical function</rs> of
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_26" n="N025"/>the human mind. <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">Language </rs>makes it possible that man produces tools. There are very interesting
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_27" n="N026"/>experiments about the way in which animals, especially higher apes, use tools. If you take their
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_28" n="N027"/>food away from them, and give them a stick, they use the stick to get the food. But they
               <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_29" n="N028"/>don’t produce a tool as a tool, and here the most important word is the word “as.” Man
              <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_31" n="N029"/>produces tools as tools, and therefore he has been defined, rightly—at least in <emph rend="allcaps">one</emph> of his
              <lb facs="#facs_12_tr_1_tl_32" n="N030"/>functions—as <hi rend="italics">homo faber</hi>, “he who fabricates,” the man who is able to fabricate tools, and

               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_4" n="N002"/>character is what is made possible through human <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">language</rs>. Only because man is able
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_5" n="N003"/>to say “hammer” or “pot” or “cup” or “wheel,”  or any other of the primitive tools,
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_6" n="N004"/>and makes a thing which always has this character, which has become a <rs type="keyword" ref="#Universals">universal</rs>, which
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_7" n="N005"/>has “as” character—tool as tool, hammer as hammer—, man is different from all other
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_8" n="N006"/>living beings and produces a whole new world out of the given world, transforming the
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_9" n="N007"/>given reality into technical creations.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_10" n="N008"/>Now the immensity of this possibility is visible to the man of the 20th century
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_11" n="N009"/>more than to any other man in all history. But even [in] the most primitive man who made
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_12" n="N010"/>the fist tool—perhaps a knife, in order to cut—the principal character of man, this fundamental
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_13" n="N011"/>function of his <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">culture</rs>, was present, and the most complicated <rs type="keyword" ref="#Artificial_Intelligence">artificial brain</rs> of today is only
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_14" n="N012"/>a logical continuation of this fundamental power of the human mind to produce tools.
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_15" n="N013"/>And don't forget what I said, that this is possible only because man has the power of
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_16" n="N014"/>
                  <rs type="keyword" ref="#Universals">universals</rs>, is <rs type="keyword" ref="#Freedom">free </rs>from the given, has language.<rs type="keyword" ref="#Technical_Function"> Technical functions </rs>are dependent—as 
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_17" n="N015"/>are all other functions—on <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">language</rs>. This refers to all realms of reality. I gave, for the
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_18" n="N016"/>technical or transforming function, examples only out of physical techniques, but there are also
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_19" n="N017"/>biological, psychological, sociological techniques—biological in growing plants and animals
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_20" n="N018"/>(as in agriculture, gardening, growing animals); or medicine, the techniques of growing
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_21" n="N019"/>in <emph rend="allcaps">spite</emph> of interferences from other forces from outside, or disturbances from inside.
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_22" n="N020"/>The technical function is all-pervasive. Even this lecture has a technical side, without which
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_23" n="N021"/>it would not be possible. This refers also to economies, to politics, to education. This whole
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_24" n="N022"/>great realm has been often too much neglected by not only theologians but also [philosophers?]
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_25" n="N023"/>and has been treated as something of minor importance. But we cannot do that any more;
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_26" n="N024"/>the revenge of the technical realm was that it swallowed all the others, including <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religion</rs>.
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_27" n="N025"/>We will see this when I deal with the present situation.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_28" n="N026"/>Generally speaking one can say: the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Technical_Function">technical function</rs> of human culture is the
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_29" n="N027"/>function in which means are used for intended ends. So we have now two functions,
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_30" n="N028"/>which we have to confront with religion.<note type="ea">
                 
                 According to the table of contents, there are eight functions:
                 1. Language; 
                 2. Transforming or technical function; 
                 3. Cognitive perception; 
                 4. Aesthetic intuition;
                 5. Social exchange;
                 6. Function of the law;
                 7. Experience of the norm;
                 8. Political functions.
              </note>
              In the technical function, in all transformation of reality
              <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_31" n="N029"/>for an end—that's technique—there is something implied. It is presupposed, and on the other
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_32" n="N030"/>hand enhances the technical function, namely the function of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Cognitive_Function">cognitive perception</rs>. And this
               <lb facs="#facs_13_tr_2_tl_33" n="N031"/>is the third one, to which I refer. Now notice here one methodological point. I don't

               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_3" n="N003"/>The reasons for this is that man is not first of all somebody who <emph rend="allcaps">looks</emph> at reality, who
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_4" n="N004"/>contemplates reality, and then makes <rs type="keyword" ref="#Signs">signs </rs>out of it, but man is first of all a being who
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_5" n="N005"/>uses tools for ends. The <rs type="keyword" ref="#Technical_Function">technical function</rs> is, so to speak, metaphysically older than the
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_6" n="N006"/>theoretical or cognitive function. Therefore the existentialist philosopher <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__841">Heidegger </rs>has
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_7" n="N007"/>rightly emphasized that man meets reality first in terms of tools, of things <emph rend="allcaps">for something</emph>,
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_8" n="N008"/>but not as objects of contemplation.<note type="ea">
               In <hi style="font-style: italic;">Being and Time</hi> Heidegger introduces his analysis of reality through tools or equipment (<hi rend="italics">Zeug</hi>), Being and Time 1, ch. 3 (esp. the example of a hammer in § 15-16). 
              </note>
               </p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_9" n="N009"/>But of course, the moment in which you make tools, you must have the
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_10" n="N010"/>
                  <rs type="keyword" ref="#Participation">participation</rs> of the material which you deal with, and of the ends which you want to reach.
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_11" n="N011"/>And so, the cognitive element develops. Here we come to the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Cognitive_Function">cognitive function</rs> (or, in a
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_12" n="N012"/>more larger sense, participative function) of human culture. In order to use reality, we must
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_13" n="N013"/>discover the behavior of reality. So the cognitive function is connected with the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Technical_Function">technical</rs>,
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_14" n="N014"/>and both together are always at work, as we know it from our own experience. They are
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_15" n="N015"/>partly dependent and partly independent of each other. The greatest advances in technical
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_16" n="N016"/>power have been made by pure cognition, by pure theory, and it is a right complaint of
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_17" n="N017"/>many educators in this country, in the technical sciences, that one goes much too quickly
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_18" n="N018"/>to the applied science before developing, independently, without asking the question, “For what?,” 
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_19" n="N019"/>pure scientific knowledge. This is another function which we must keep clear, in spite of
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_20" n="N020"/>the pragmatic interdependence with techniques. This function is based on the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">
                     <hi style="font-style: italic;">eros</hi>
                  </rs>, the love,
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_21" n="N021"/>towards knowing, even if it is not connected with practical purposes. So in spite of my
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_22" n="N022"/>emphasis on techniques, I must also emphasize the comparative independence of the will-to-knowledge
               <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_23" n="N023"/>from any special application of this knowledge. And those of you who in some
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_24" n="N024"/>way or other have to do with technical things, in any realm—not only physical techniques
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_25" n="N025"/>but also psychological and biological—don't forget what I said today, namely that the more
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_26" n="N026"/>science works first of all independent[ly], driven by pure <hi rend="italics">eros</hi>, in the Platonic sense—by 
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_27" n="N027"/>the pure love of knowledge—the more it can be applied later on to technical purposes.
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_28" n="N028"/>But if from the very beginning <gap/> it asks “How can that be used?"—which means, in a
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_29" n="N029"/>deteriorized form, “How can the factory make money out of it?"—then never a great
              <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_30" n="N030"/>discovery will happen.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_14_tr_2_tl_31" n="N031"/>There are realms of cognition which are completely independent of technical

               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_5" n="N005"/>but they had a happy life when they listened to these internal voices [forces?]. All of
              <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_6" n="N006"/>historical science is based on the same passion, to know how it really has been,<note type="ea">The phrase goes back to Leopold von Ranke (1795-1886), cf.

              to know

               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_8" n="N008"/>Finally,<rs type="keyword" ref="#Ontology"> the knowledge of philosophy</rs>, which includes the question: “How is the
              <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_9" n="N009"/>structure of being-itself?"—not any special being, not even human being, but being-itself
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_10" n="N010"/>universally. This is the greatest of all curiosities and it is a curiosity which is so fundamental
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_11" n="N011"/>for the human mind that in every primitive myth, the philosophical question is
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_12" n="N012"/>present, expressed in a poetic-intuitive way, united with conceptual elements. Only later
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_13" n="N013"/>do the conceptual elements become independent. But again I would say: <rs type="keyword" ref="#Philosophy_of_Philosophy">every true
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_14" n="N014"/>philosopher is driven by the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Eros">
                        <hi rend="italics">eros</hi>
                     </rs>, by the love, to know what that being in which he
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_15" n="N015"/>finds himself, really is. He wants to know <rs type="keyword" ref="#Ultimate_Reality">ultimate reality</rs>, and a philosophy which does
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_16" n="N016"/>not have this <hi rend="italics">eros</hi> any more, which is self-sufficient in dealing with the logical presuppositions
               <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_17" n="N017"/>of science alone, is not driven by the philosophical <hi rend="italics">eros</hi>. It may be driven by
                  <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_18" n="N018"/>special scientific <hi rend="italics">eros</hi>—I don’t mind this, and I don’t deny it—but philosophy as philosophy
                  <lb break="no" facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_20" n="N019"/>wants to <emph rend="allcaps">know</emph> what the reality is in which we are living.</rs>
               </p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_22" n="N020"/>Now this is the third function—again dependent on <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">language</rs>, on <rs type="keyword" ref="#Universals">universals</rs>—the 
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_23" n="N021"/>perceptive or <rs type="keyword" ref="#Cognitive_Function">cognitive function</rs> of human <rs type="keyword" ref="#Culture">culture</rs>. And as you can imagine, this will
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_24" n="N022"/>be a very central problem for our discussion of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religion </rs>and culture. We have to deal with
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_25" n="N023"/>religion and science, with religion and historical research, with religion and depth psychology,
              <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_26" n="N024"/>with religion and philosophy.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_27" n="N025"/>I come now to the fourth function of human culture, based on the encounter with
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_28" n="N026"/>reality, a function which arises as early as the production of tools, and somehow earlier
              <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_29" n="N027"/>as independent cognition, as the will to know—namely, the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Aesthetic_Intuition">aesthetic intuition</rs> of reality.
              <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_30" n="N028"/>This aesthetic intuition creates the artistic forms—first of all in language, or at the same time,
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_32" n="N029"/>usually, in sounds. The first we call poetry, the second music <gap/>, the third visual arts;
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_35" n="N030"/>or in movements (dance or theater). In all these functions, the intuition of reality expresses
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_37" n="N031"/>itself, and therefore in contrast to the transforming and to the perceiving functions of man's
               <lb facs="#facs_15_tr_1_tl_38" n="N032"/>cultural life, I call this the expressive function of man’s cultural life: the aesthetic function

               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_3" n="N003"/>of the cultural creativity. For example a painting: it expresses the life power of the
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_4" n="N004"/>encountered reality. For instance, if a tree is painted, the inner life power of this astonishing
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_5" n="N005"/>reality which we call a tree; not astonishing for our daily life, but astonishing for the artistic
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_6" n="N006"/>view, which not only the artist but every human being has sometimes, when he looks at the
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_7" n="N007"/>greatness and the miraculous character of a tree. This is expressed in a great painting.
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_8" n="N008"/>It is different from the cognitive perception, which describes scientifically the relations this tree
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_9" n="N009"/>has to its own causes, to its surroundings, to its effects, etc. It sees something else, it sees
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_10" n="N010"/>the power-of-being in a tree, and therefore it doesn’t need to be naturalistic or photographical:
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_11" n="N011"/>it <emph rend="allcaps">expresses</emph>. And therefore in some way all great art is “expressionistic,” although
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_12" n="N012"/>this word has been used for a special style.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_13" n="N013"/>On the other hand the other side of expression is the way in which the
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_14" n="N014"/>artistic mind <emph rend="allcaps">receives</emph> this life power. And not everybody receives this in the same way.
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_15" n="N015"/>Nobody does. And all the great artistic styles and their individual representatives express
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_16" n="N016"/>their reception of the life power of reality in a different way, according to their special
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_17" n="N017"/>style. We can make this duality of expression (expressing the object—its life power; and
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_18" n="N018"/>expressing the subject—its receptive power) in dividing the arts. Perhaps of all the arts
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_20" n="N019"/>the visual arts express most adequately the life power of things, while music expresses <emph rend="allcaps">also</emph>
                  <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_21" n="N020"/>life power, but more predominantly the subjective element. But there is no alternative—either 
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_23" n="N021"/>subjective or objective—both are always present, but the emphasis is always different.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_24" n="N022"/>Artistic, <rs type="keyword" ref="#Aesthetic_Intuition">aesthetic elements</rs>—elements of expressive power—are present in all
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_25" n="N023"/>other functions, <emph rend="allcaps">in</emph> all language. Therefore the early language is often at least as poetic,
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_26" n="N024"/>as scientific, and as technical. It has all three elements in itself. And even the creation of
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_27" n="N025"/>
                  <emph rend="allcaps">good</emph> tools is an artistic creation besides being a technical one. So these three functions
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_28" n="N026"/>permeate each other. And this is especially true of the historical vision of reality and the
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_29" n="N027"/>philosophical perception of it. Every historian is in some way an artist, and a philosopher
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_30" n="N028"/>without artistic intuition is not a philosopher—a craftsman perhaps, but not more than this.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_31" n="N029"/>On the other hand—and this is an important statement which is much discussed—,
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_32" n="N030"/>there are cognitive elements in every artistic creation. Artistic creations reveal levels of reality.
              <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_33" n="N031"/>Take a novel: the classical novels, e.g., <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__3064">Dostoevsky</rs>, have revealed more of the psychological
               <lb facs="#facs_16_tr_1_tl_34" n="N032"/>nature than perhaps any academic psychologist ever did. It is interesting to see how today
            </p>

               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_3" n="N003"/>perceptions of the great artists, poets and novelists. These functions are what we want

               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_5" n="N005"/>I now come back to language. <rs type="keyword" ref="#Language">Language</rs> has two functions. Up to now
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_6" n="N006"/>I only dealt with one function: the designating. It designates universal. But language
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_7" n="N007"/>always has another function at the same time: communication. These two functions
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_8" n="N008"/>are equally fundamental and are interdependent. The emphasis in techniques, in science,
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_9" n="N009"/>and even in art was on the designative function of language. In the other group of
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_10" n="N010"/>cultural functions the emphasis is on the communicative function. This leads to the first
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_11" n="N011"/>function of the second group, namely the function of social exchange, with which we
              <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_12" n="N012"/>must start next semester's lectures—of course always under the point of view of their
              <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_13" n="N013"/>relationship to religion.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_14" n="N014"/>The function of social exchange has many forms: economic exchange (usually
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_15" n="N015"/>called trading); intellectual exchange (teaching, discussing, receiving); the transforming exchange
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_16" n="N016"/>(using technical elements, as in medicine and education); the spiritual exchange (communication
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_17" n="N017"/>of meanings); and most important, the personal exchange (what we usually call love, in all
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_18" n="N018"/>its different forms). Now all this belongs to what I call social exchange. And <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religion</rs>
                  <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_19" n="N019"/>in relation to social exchange (or social community, if you prefer this phrase) is the
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_20" n="N020"/>fifth cultural function, the first in the second large group. But social exchange presupposes
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_21" n="N021"/>the existence of a society of persons. This leads to the next function, the function of the
              <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_22" n="N022"/>law.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_23" n="N023"/>Social exchange goes on under the law, under a legal structure of all social
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_24" n="N024"/>relations. The importance of this doesn’t need to be emphasized in Harvard University and
              <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_25" n="N025"/>its famous Law School. But sometimes it is good that the Law School<note type="ea">
                 Harvard Law School was founded in 1817 and is one of the oldest law schools in the United States; it is the nation’s oldest continuously operating law school
                 and one of the most prestigious in the world.
              </note>
              is related to philosophy
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_26" n="N026"/>and theology, and that the function of the law (besides its organization of social exchange
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_27" n="N027"/>for man’s <emph rend="allcaps">whole</emph> culture, and for his ultimate concern, namely religion) is discussed. And
              <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_28" n="N028"/>that is what we shall do.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_29" n="N029"/>The <rs type="keyword" ref="#Law">law</rs> is also as genuine as language, and is also older than developed
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_30" n="N030"/>science. When I use the word “law” I want to remind you of the fact that this word
               <lb facs="#facs_17_tr_2_tl_31" n="N031"/>is used today in two very different ways: on the one hand, the social law, which organizes

                  <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_2" n="N002"/>society and on the other hand, <rs type="keyword" ref="#Natural_Law">natural law</rs>. Again natural law is used in two ways:
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_3" n="N003"/>as physical law, and law for morals. What is the original meaning of the law? Certainly
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_4" n="N004"/>not physical laws—which is much later and is an application of the experience of the
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_5" n="N005"/>social law, which existed in the moment in which two human beings lived together,
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_6" n="N006"/>to physics. It is transferred by analogy to the physical realm. This analogy expresses
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_7" n="N007"/>itself still in the fact that the term has great insecurities and fallacies in itself. One
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_8" n="N008"/>hundred years ago the natural law was replacing the God of former centuries. Today
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_9" n="N009"/>the natural law, in the sense of physical laws (the laws according to which nature
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_10" n="N010"/>moves) has become one of the most questionable concepts in physics itself. And
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_11" n="N011"/>this is so because analogies never are completely valid.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_12" n="N012"/>In any case the legal realm is fundamental and original, and one of those
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_13" n="N013"/>cultural functions which are of course possible only through language—every law is expressed
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_14" n="N014"/>in language, and the earliest writings we have on the stone tablets of the past are legal
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_15" n="N015"/>formulas.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_16" n="N016"/>But the law itself has an element within it which carries the same name:
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_17" n="N017"/>natural law in the sense of rational law. This name means that there is something underlying
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_18" n="N018"/>all law, namely the principle of <rs type="keyword" ref="#Justice">justice</rs>. The question always is: according to which
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_19" n="N019"/>norms can laws be given? As you know (we will discuss it much fuller), there is a
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_20" n="N020"/>tendency to the merely positive law in the Anglo Saxon philosophy of law. In other
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_21" n="N021"/>nations, especially France, the rational law prevails over against the positive law. In any
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_22" n="N022"/>case, there are underlying principles of justice in every law, and this leads me to the
              <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_23" n="N023"/>next function, namely to the norm-giving, or the ethical function.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_24" n="N024"/>The seventh function of culture—the experience of the norm—happens in the encounter
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_25" n="N025"/>with the other person. This also is an ever-present reality. There, discovery is the experience
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_26" n="N026"/>of meeting the other one, who also is a person. I will deal with this very fully because
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_27" n="N027"/>this is one of the profoundest insights of modern philosophy, namely that there is
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_28" n="N028"/>no person, no ego, which is not encountering a “thou,” another one. Only the other
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_30" n="N029"/>ego limits us and throws us back to ourselves and demands unconditionally the acceptance
               <lb facs="#facs_18_tr_1_tl_31" n="N030"/>of the other person as a person. There is no person in isolation. “Person” arises only in

                  <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_2" n="N002"/>the encounter with another person. They become persons in this encounter. There is a
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_3" n="N003"/>phenomenon—which I like to call “resistance”—which makes the person possible. Imagine
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_4" n="N004"/>for a moment if you were alone in the world, you could swallow the whole world into
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_5" n="N005"/>yourself without resistance, except that resistance which can be overcome technically.
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_6" n="N006"/>But there is the other person, and in the moment in which you encounter him, you cannot
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_7" n="N007"/>go on, you cannot swallow it—of course you can do it, you can make the other person
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_8" n="N008"/>into a piece of nature. But then you destroy yourself, because in the other person is an
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_9" n="N009"/>unconditional demand to accept him as another person. Everything unconditional is first
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_10" n="N010"/>experienced in the ego-thou encounter, in the encounter of person with person. We call
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_11" n="N011"/>this the realm of morals, and its theory: <rs type="keyword" ref="#Ethics">ethics</rs>.</p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_12" n="N012"/>The eighth function: social exchange, law and ethical reality, are existing not in
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_13" n="N013"/>the air, but in a powerful reality, in a community which has the power to be. We can call
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_14" n="N014"/>this community “state,” but this is a very late word, of the 17th and 18th centuries.

               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_16" n="N016"/>to be and to act. Whether we call it this way or that way, it is also an ever-present
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_17" n="N017"/>reality of every culture. In the most primitive patriarchal society (as we read about it in
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_18" n="N018"/>the <rs type="bible"
                      ref="#tl-bible-id__stories-of-the-patriarchs-of-the-old-testament">stories of the Patriarchs of the Old Testament</rs>), we have a state-like function—we have law, the
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_19" n="N019"/>power of action, a centered reality. Therefore the highest concepts of philosophers and
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_20" n="N020"/>theologians are derived directly or symbolically from this all-embracing cultural reality.
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_21" n="N021"/>
                  <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__1510">Plato</rs>'s 
              <rs type="work" ref="#tillich__WG82NGNJ">politeia</rs>
                 uses a conversation between Socrates and his friends and acquaintances to explore the question of the nature of justice. At the end of Book I, Socrates
                 answers the question by saying that justice is the specific virtue of the soul, which alone guarantees a good life and happiness. The following books,
                 which were probably written later, attempt to define the term more precisely in the strict sense of dialectics and then discuss the question of justice
                 within the actual theme of the work, the state and education. Central to this is the thesis of parallelism between the polis and the individual soul.
                 The concepts of virtue gained from the polis are applied to the individual. Book 5 contains reflections on the realisability of the ideal state and the philosopher-king,
                 while Books 6-7 present the famous theoretical explanations of the doctrine of ideas through three parables: the sun parable, the line parable, and the cave parable.
                 Books 8-9 discuss unjust forms of government, and Book 10 finally takes up once again the criticism of poets and the question of justice.
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_22" n="N022"/>everything. <rs type="person" ref="#tillich_person_id__100">Augustine</rs>'s
              <rs type="work" ref="#tillich__72ISTRNG">De civitate Dei</rs>
              (“the society of God and of the earth”) <note type="ea">Augustine's <hi style="font-style: italic;">De civitate Dei</hi> On the City of God/the Community of God, is an influential work 
                 in which Augustine outlines a theology of history and discusses the relationship to ancient culture, especially philosophy, ethics, and political ethics in particular.
                 The specific occasion for the writing was the fall of Rome on August 24, 410, which came as a shock to Christians and non-Christians alike.
                 The pagan leaders of the Roman nobility blamed Christians and their neglect of traditional worship of the gods for the catastrophe.
                 The work is divided into refutation and exposition (subdivided into the origin, history, and destiny of the two cities, i.e., the origin, progress, and end of history).
                 Central motifs include the comparison of Jerusalem and Babylon, the civitas dei as <hi rend="italic">...</hi>
                  </note> (pilgrim), and the distinction between <hi rend="italics">uti</hi> and <hi rend="italics">frui</hi>
                  <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_23" n="N023"/>are the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Symbols">symbols</rs> he uses for the fulfilment, and for the <rs type="keyword" ref="#Demonic">demonic</rs> opposition against the fulfilment.
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_24" n="N024"/>The <rs type="keyword" ref="#Kingdom_of_God">
                     <rs type="bible" ref="#tl-bible-id__kingdom-of-god">kingdom of God</rs>
                  </rs> in the Old and New Testament is a political symbol applied to the
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_25" n="N025"/>universe. This means: the last and most embracing of cultural functions is the political one—it 
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_26" n="N026"/>embraces everything. </p>
               <p>
                  <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_27" n="N027"/>Now I am at the end of the organization of the lectures. The last four
               <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_28" n="N028"/>subjects will be discussed next semester, the first four in the first. And there is no
              <lb facs="#facs_19_tr_2_tl_29" n="N029"/>
                  <rs type="keyword" ref="#Religion">religion</rs> in my enumeration, and I will tell you next Tuesday why.</p>
